The idea

Over four years ago reForm’s managing director Nik Randall came up with an initial design concept for a new bridge crossing between Rotherhithe and Canary Wharf. With no client, brief or fee, this ‘self-start’ project has been developed by reForm who have worked closely with structural engineers, Elliott Wood Partnership, to develop the registered design that you will see within the public domain today.

In 2015 Sustrans, (a charity with a focus on developing sustainable transport strategies and who had independently been looking at the same need for a crossing in this location) approached us to assist with a feasibility study to test the viability of the idea for a crossing in this location. Sustrans’ work demonstrated the demand and benefits a bridge would bring to London, whilst we identified the constraints and challenges any bridge would have to address in this location, and used our registered design proposal to test if they could be met.

Since the publication of this feasibility study, we have continued to develop our design, and to ‘spread the word’ visiting local schools, meeting residents and attending community events.

The idea for a pedestrian and cycle bridge now has the support of the Mayor and Transport for London and we continue to promote our ‘ready to go’ design, in the hope that this much needed piece of infrastructure can be delivered as soon as possible.

For more information on the completed feasibility study please see our Rotherhithe Bridge project page.
